The cold arrives and the animals that have spent the summer in the mountains retreat to the bottom of the valleys to spend the winter.

The horses of Pabro Moreno from Casa Palanca have spent the summer in Tor, in Pallars Sobirà. These days he goes down to Sant Martí de Canals, in the Pallars Jussà.

The 75 kilometers that separate these two towns are done on foot. To avoid tiring the animals, they separate the journey with different stages.

On Monday they made the trip from Baro to Gerri de la Sal and this Tuesday they will finish the route and arrive at Conca de Dalt. The passage of nearly two hundred animals through the towns arouses the curiosity of more than one neighbor, unaccustomed to seeing so many animals together.

During the route, the horses detour along old roads or wide shoulders to facilitate the passage of vehicles and not cause long queues.

To order the coexistence between animals and vehicles, the Mossos d'Esquadra stop drivers when passing horses and mares.

It is a round trip; Now in November the horses come down from the mountains to spend the winter away from the snow and near the pastures. In late spring, they will do the reverse and return to the mountains in search of fresh green grass.

Many ranchers take their animals to spend the summer in the mountains, but fewer and fewer make the transhumance on foot. The vast majority do it with trucks.
