The tourist tax promotes 400 projects to better distribute visitors to Barcelona

Barcelona will allocate 5.4 million euros of the tourist tax collected in 2022 to 39 projects to promote culture, diversify tourism and improve its projection. The Consistory received in this mandate 54 million from this rate. In addition, a new municipal surcharge will mean another income of 52 million this year. Since the creation of the tax in 2012, Barcelona has financed 400 projects.

The mayor of Tourism, Xavier Marcé, said that it is a "diversified" package of projects to introduce tourists to less popular places and thus avoid crowds. Marcé stressed that these initiatives "can become engines of the commercial fabric of the districts."

According to the councilor, 1.6 million will promote district projects; 2.2, others of a cultural nature and international promotion, and 1.5, measures in favor of sustainability and participation. Cultural and recreational activities are planned for the district projects during major festivals and also actions related to the commercial world.

During the Nou Barris festival, a panoramic tourist device will be launched that will show the heritage and natural environment of the area. The City Council wants to set up a sanitary cabin in one of the flower shops on La Rambla. A pilot test will promote relations between hotels, entities and local businesses in Ciutat Vella. An itinerary with outdoor installations and sculptures will promote the landscape elements of Collserola. In addition, the Consistory will reinforce surveillance and mediation in specific tourist spots in the city.

The Councilor for Tourism also pointed out that, of the 54 million entered in the last four years, 13 were invested in correcting "conflicting" activities generated by tourism; eleven to economic and promotional development; four to promotional activities carried out from the districts themselves; another four to the promotion from the City Council; and 17 to the Consorci de Turisme.
