The prestigious comic book artist Carlos Pacheco dies

The comic book artist Carlos Pacheco died this Wednesday at the Hospital de La Línea de la Concepción, in Cádiz, as reported by several publishers through social networks.

The almost 61-year-old artist (he turned them next November) had been retired since April due to health problems and announced last September that he suffered from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

The Association of Comic Authors of Spain (AACE) recognized last week the professional career of Pacheco, cartoonist of great icons of the world of superheroes such as Superman, Captain America or Green Lantern.

“The final diagnosis makes it clear: Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, in short, ALS, you know, that thing about the ice cubes. It is what it is and it is what must be faced, ”explained Pacheco himself in a text that he published in September on Facebook.

Born in San Roque (Cádiz) in 1961, Carlos Pacheco began his professional career as a cartoonist while finishing his degree in Biology at the University of Seville. At the end of the 1980s, he began to collaborate with the publishing house Planeta de Agostini.

That work allowed him to customize the Spanish editions of Marvel Comics comics with new covers, posters and illustrations. From the X-Men to The Avengers, through The Fantastic 4, Captain America or Nick Fury.

In 1993 he was hired by the British division of Marvel Comics. The first complete series he drew, and the one he introduced to her, was Dark Guard. A year later, DC Comics called him to participate in eight issues of The Flash.

Marvel did not want the young talent to escape him, so he signed him exclusively. His last job for this publisher was his participation in the special Heroes, a book dedicated to fundraising for the September 11, 2001 attacks.

Shortly after, he signed with DC Comics to put all his creativity at the service of the most famous characters in the world of superheroes such as Superman, Batman or Green Lantern, in addition to the Arrowsmith series of his own creation.

He would still return to the House of Ideas again to work in the Ultimate universe before getting into the X-Men and other classic heroes and villains like Ultron or Captain America.
