“As I have already stated in each public appearance and at my inauguration, the start of work on the new northern terminal is a priority and undisputed number one objective of this presidency.” It is the only statement that the president of the port of Valencia, Mar Chao, has made this Tuesday, in her public appearance, on the possible upcoming approval of the northern expansion in the Council of Ministers.
The Port Authority of Valencia had summoned the media after the Board of Directors held “to explain the matters regarding La Marina de València discussed in the Council.” And this is only what Chao referred to at the press conference, who was accompanied by Mayor María José Catalá, now also the Port's advisor.
In response to questions from the media about the price adjustment of the construction project or about the perspectives on the approval of the northern expansion, a topical issue with recent references by both the president of the Generalitat Valenciana and the president of the Valencian employers' association. , Chao did not want to answer.
He recalled that the call was limited to the Navy, a space on which the specifications and conditions for the granting of an administrative occupation concession for nautical-sports facilities in the northern area of the Port have been approved.
However, in an informal huddle with journalists after finishing the appearance, he did confirm that the price update for the Port expansion had been approved, which he then explained that "it has no influence whatsoever on the pending project." approval by the Council of Ministers.”
Thus, in its subsequent note, the Port has argued that the prices approved by the Board of Directors in December 2022 for this project have become outdated since the budget was formulated in the first quarter of 2021, using unit prices of materials, machinery and labor corresponding to 2020. They were 542,694,149.17 euros VAT included and now, a year after the project was approved and almost two years since the first cost calculation was made, the figures change.
“The continuous and persistent upward trend in prices in the new period of time that has passed has led the Port Authority of Valencia to update the prices of the different work units included in the construction project approved in 2022, resulting in a new budget for this same work of 660,387,997.83 euros VAT included,” argues the Port Authority.
