The owner of a supermarket in Écija was arrested for selling food "decomposing and "with insects"

Agents of the National Police have arrested in the municipality of Écija (Seville) the person in charge of a food establishment for his alleged participation in a crime against public health. The agents are also investigating the owner of the same. In the sanitary inspection carried out that led to the arrest, food "decomposed" and some "with insects" were found.

The investigation began when the agents learned that a supermarket in this town was selling products whose hygienic and sanitary characteristics did not comply with current regulations, as reported by the National Police in a press release on Monday.

The person in charge of the establishment took advantage of the lack of economic resources of some residents of the area and of others who traveled from nearby municipalities to "take advantage of the attractive offers", since this person sold the products at a price "much lower than the one set by the market".

On May 11, agents of the National Police in collaboration with Public Security agents, belonging to the Osuna Health Area (Seville), carried out an inspection in the supermarket, where they were able to verify the "serious irregularities" that were being committed in it and that they also posed "an imminent and extraordinary risk to health".

The facilities inspected by the agents "lacked the minimum hygienic and sanitary measures that all products must comply with in order to reach the final consumer with full guarantee." In some cases, foods that should be kept cold were stored at room temperature, "some of them decomposing," thereby causing a "strong stench." In other cases, the products even had "insects".
