The other side of Huelva's red fruits comes to the cinema: "Images never seen to date"

The invisible, modern slavery in Europe is the title of the documentary written and directed by Swiss director Sven Rufer for the Rosa de Luxembourg International Foundation that shows "the other reality" of the red fruits of Huelva, focusing on the working and personal conditions of thousands of migrant workers.

The film, in 4K feature film format and shot entirely in the province of Huelva, will be released on October 6 at the 18th edition of the Marbella International Film Festival, the Foundation reported in a statement.

It is a documentary and cinematographic work that "includes striking images never seen to date, some of them obtained - for the first time - inside Huelva's own red fruit farms during the hard working days, and which stands out both for the quality of the format as well as for the first-person testimonies".

Testimonies that "reveal an unknown daily life about an industry that generates more than one billion euros a year and exports most of its production to European countries," they added.

At the same time, like a kind of academic road movie, a doctoral student at the University of Bern investigates the working conditions and the health consequences of these precarious living situations.

His conversations with representatives of unions, journalism, politics and academia show that "there are no simple solutions and that Spain, the EU, large distributors and other speculators do not seem to want to change anything."

In the words of the film's director, Sven Rufer, with The Invisible he aims to show that "this is not happening on the other side of the world, but in Spain, an EU country and popular holiday destination. The fruits do not end somewhere, but in our supermarkets and, finally, on my own plate. For me it is an important issue to bring it to the screen, raise awareness among the public and give voice to the invisible."

The invisible, modern slavery in Europe will be premiered in the competition section of The 18th Marbella International Film Festival on Friday, October 6, and will have a second showing on Saturday, the 7th at the Red Dogs Cinema in Marbella.

This is the first time that this "other reality" has been brought to the high-quality documentary film format with the intention of touring festivals, screening rooms and prominent streaming platforms.
