The new prosecutor general promises his position before the King in the Almudaina palace in Palma

The new Attorney General of the State, Álvaro García Ortiz, has promised his position this Tuesday in the presence of the King, the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, the Minister of Justice, Pilar Llop and the President of the Supreme Court and the General Council of the Judiciary , Carlos Lesmes. The ceremony took place in the Almudaina Palace, in Palma, where the scenery of the usual stage in the Zarzuela Palace, including a table and a copy of the Constitution, was reproduced in order to preserve the solemnity of the act.

After promising his position before the King, García Ortiz can now exercise his position but the formal inauguration will take place on September 5 at the headquarters of the State Attorney General's Office, in Madrid. That same week, he will participate in the opening of the Judicial Year 2022-2023 that will take place in the Plenary Hall of the Supreme Court.

The Prime Minister arrived at the palace shortly before noon and was received in the courtyard by Jaime Alfonsín, head of the King's House. Complying with protocol, Sánchez wore a suit and tie, although he later chose to take it off for the subsequent press conference.

Upstairs, in the Gothic room, where last Friday the King's audiences with the Balearic authorities took place, under a tapestry that represents a bucolic scene, the ceremony that coincided with the bells of the first quarter of 1 noon took place that have sounded from the nearby cathedral. The Chief of Protocol of the King's House has read the appointment decree approved by the last Council of Ministers and signed by the King and the President of the Government; García Ortiz then, with his right hand placed on a copy of the Constitution opened by article 124, which refers to the functions of the public prosecutor's office, promised his post with the formula "I promise on my conscience and honor to faithfully fulfill the obligations of the position of Attorney General of the State with loyalty to the King and to keep and keep the Constitution".

After a break of barely 15 minutes, the King formally received the President of the Government, in the same Gothic room, to hold the traditional summer office which, on this occasion and exceptionally, is held in the Almudaina, instead of in the Marivent Palace, the scene of these meetings since Adolfo Suárez and King Juan Carlos began this tradition in 1977.

Until the summer of 2013, Suárez, Felipe González, José María Aznar, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero and Mariano Rajoy passed through Marivent. After the proclamation, in June 2014, of Felipe VI, the current head of state has held audiences in Marivent with Rajoy and Pedro Sánchez.

The transfer of the office of the summer residence of the royal family in the Marivent compound, to the palace that belonged to the former kings of Mallorca, located next to the Palma cathedral, is due to the coincidence with the act of promise of the new prosecutor In general, an act of state that requires a stage and a solemnity that the private rooms of the royal family lack.

After the office and Sánchez's appearance before the media, the King and Prime Minister will have a private lunch in one of the rooms of the Almudaina Palace
