Castropol sits on a promontory on the eastern shore of the Eo estuary, as can be seen in the Photos of the Readers of La Vanguardia. It was founded at the beginning of the 14th century by the Bishop of Oviedo, in a strategic place that archeology has shown to have been occupied since the 2nd century BC. c.
From its privileged position, Castropol flows into the majestic Eo estuary, the natural border between Asturias and Galicia. Its old town, with palaces and emblazoned houses, chapels, churches and squares, stands out both for its civil and religious architecture from the last three or four centuries.
In 1997, the town of Castropol received the Exemplary Town of Asturias Award for having "always been an example of respect for the best Asturian enlightened traditions".
Castropol stands out for its oysters, which are farmed. In the estuary it is common to see drifters training and competing. The town lives facing the sea, with fishing and the classic lateen sail boats, worse also with sports such as windsurfing, kayaking or water skiing, with the setting of the great Eo estuary.
A legend says that, in its depths, two Spanish galleys loaded with jewels are preserved... Is it true?
