The kiss of Trump and Putin

In Vilnius (Lithuania), there is a huge graffiti on a wall where Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin are about to kiss, but what they are actually exchanging is marijuana smoke. Feeling these two characters, sometimes one thinks that some of the things they say or do are the result of them smoking more than is advisable for their health and that of everyone. Hearing Putin repeatedly threaten to hit the nuclear button and hearing a retort of Trump on British television saying that Biden is a weakling and that if he were the president he would reply that the United States has far more weapons and enough submarine power to iron out Russia , only contributes to scaring the planet.

For a moment, I thought about the dystopia if Trump had been re-elected and had to face the invasion of Ukraine. I want to recall that Trump asked Putin for help in seushackers recovering emails from Hillary Clinton that could harm her in the presidential election. And even this same year he asked the Russian president (who until recently he called "my friend") to pass on information about payments made in Moscow to a son of Joe Biden to try to ruin the career of the tenant of the White House. And not only that, Trump repeats that NATO is an institution without a future, which sounds like heavenly music to Putin.

It is possible that with Trump in power Ukraine would be occupied and the country torn apart. And the EU weakened in the extreme, while its Baltic partners wouldn't have the clothes on their backs. One of the Trumpist intellectuals, J. D. Vance, has written without blushing: "Using the power of the United States to do Europe's dirty work is a terrible idea."

The political analyst José Ignacio Torreblanca told El Mundo that with each passing day NATO looks more like an alliance between Europe and the Democratic Party. And he's probably right. That's why it's good news that Biden saved the furniture in Tuesday's election. The US and the EU are strategic allies who must work together if we want the world to be a freer and safer place.
