The high participation in the Junts consultation points to an uncertain future for the Government

The participation of the militancy in the transcendental consultation of Junts per Catalunya on the future of the Government stood at 73% this afternoon, a figure that in percentage is close to the maximum records of the formation, whose maximum mobilization was 76% in November 2020 in the vote to elect Laura Borràs, today president of Junts, as a candidate for the regional elections, a scenario that increases uncertainty about the future of the Catalan Executive.

The current vote, which is carried out exclusively by telematic means, started at midnight from Wednesday to Thursday. Both at that first moment, and yesterday at eight o'clock in the morning, there were some technical problems that were solved shortly after due to the coincidence of many people connecting to the virtual space of JxCat affiliates.

Yesterday at noon, 22.60% of the 6,465 registered militants had already participated, almost the same percentage as in the last global vote of militancy, which took place in July when Josep Rull was confirmed as president of the national council in a vote in which he had no rivals. In the afternoon, the mobilization already doubled the previous figure with 53.65%, above the participation registered in all the internal processes of this year 2022. The census on this occasion is 6,465 affiliates and more than half have already voted.

To endorse the Govern pact that Jordi Sànchez and Pere Aragonès sealed in May 2021, 62% of the 6,528 affiliates who then had the right to vote participated. The agreement was ratified by 83% of voters. This process is the one that has mobilized the bases the most if the total number of voters is taken into account, which exceeded 4,000, although this is not the case as a percentage. The agreement obtained 3,364 supports and garnered 689 votes against.

In the primary processes for the elections to the Parliament on February 14, 2021, when the party had 5,128 militants, more than 70% of the affiliates moved, both to choose the effective candidate for the Generalitat, since Carles Puigdemont headed the list, as in the second round, when the rest of the starting positions in the four constituencies were chosen. However, it should be borne in mind that those processes took place in November and December 2020, in the midst of the covid pandemic, when there were still municipal and night confinements and the population spent many hours at home.

On this occasion, with high figures in the mobilization of associates, the stage remains open. A low participation was considered in all the pools that would favor the continuity of the coalition, but in this matter there is nothing certain. The institutional sector has shown more capacity for mobilization this past year, but on this occasion the consultation cannot be understood solely as a pulse between the two souls attributed to JxCat, since there are more factors at play, such as the fact that Puigdemont, through those close to him, has been in favor of breaking up the coalition and the former president of the Generalitat has always had a lot of circulation among his own.
