The headwaters of the Segre river already have sections below the ecological flow

The ecological flow of the Segre river at the headwaters does not comply "quite generally" with the minimums established for this time in the Ebro Hydrological Plan. This has been confirmed by the Rural Agents body, which this summer has carried out twenty inspections to verify if the volume of water derived from the course of the river in the various intakes is the one established by the concession.

Although the data is being compiled, in general terms some non-compliances have already been detected. All this, added to the situation of drought, affects the fauna and flora of these ecosystems and one of the measures proposed is to organize fish rescues to transfer them to other points where their living conditions can be guaranteed.

The deputy inspector of the Rural Agents body Joan Baraut has indicated that the situation is "quite critical" in the entire section of the river that goes from the border with La Cerdanya to the confluence with the Valira, in the capital of Alturgelense. However, he affirmed that one of the worst points is between the Alàs bridge and the urban area of La Seu d'Urgell where, according to what he explained, when the check was made it was found that seven liters per second dropped, while the amount established in that area is one thousand. In addition, he pointed out that at that time no water was being diverted to the catchment that goes to Parque del Segre.

Baraut explained that they will inform the body of the Ebro basin of the results obtained in the flow measurements, both those that are derived towards the catchments and that which remains in the river at various points in the headwaters of the Segre. In this sense, he assured that they found "practically dry" sections and highlighted the importance of respecting the ecological flow that is precisely set to guarantee the survival of the fauna and flora associated with these ecosystems.

The measurements have been made with a device that has an ultrasonic sensor. This is placed at different points, depending on the width and depth of the sheet of water. These data, added to the speed, determine its flow. The deputy inspector of the Rural Agents Corps has said that carrying out new checks later is not ruled out if the current weather situation does not change and no episodes of rain arrive.
