The Goya Awards will be held on February 11 in Seville and will have five nominees per category

The 37th edition of the Goya Awards already has a date. A few weeks ago it was announced that they would be held in Seville, but today the Film Academy wanted to go to the Palacio del Marqués de la Motilla in the Andalusian capital to announce that the gala that celebrates the best of Spanish cinema will take place on 11 February 2023.

In addition, the president of the institution, Fernando Méndez-Leite, has reported that there will be news, such as the number of nominees in each category going from four to five, a "decision closely connected to the good times that Spanish cinema is experiencing". to which the mayor of Seville, Antonio Muñoz, responded by joking that "the Palacio de Congresos" will have to be enlarged, the place chosen for the ceremony.

Rafael Portela, vice president of the Academy, has justified this expansion of candidates in the "feeling that the academy and the public had that very valuable people were left out of the nominations" and added that raising the number of nominees from four to five "It will increase the scope of the ceremony and the red carpet, which will make this year's gala very special."

The Goyas return to a city that already hosted the successful ceremony in 2019, according to the mayor of Seville. "It is going to be a blockbuster for the city, the previous edition had an economic impact of 56 million euros," explained the mayor, remembering that the city achieved a lot of visibility with a presence in the national and international media.

On the date chosen for the celebration of the awards, Muñoz has said that he wants "that the previous days show that something special is happening in Seville".

In this sense, Méndez-Leite has pointed out that "the two weeks prior to the awards, Seville will dress up as Goya", with the celebration of concerts, exhibitions and film screenings as complementary activities with the assistance of the artists protagonists.

"We have excellent memories of the gala that we did in Seville. There we began to decentralize the activities of the Academy. In Seville we also verified the affection of the people for our cinema. I am sure it will be a great gala", said the director at the time. former president of the Academy Mariano Barroso recalling "the Andalusian city's commitment to Spanish and European cinema and culture. It is the third city in number of academics, after Madrid and Barcelona, and Andalusia has an increasingly relevant audiovisual industry ", he stressed.
