The German delegation cancels its trip to Doñana due to the "political relevance" it has acquired

The group of German parliamentarians who planned to travel to Andalusia to find out, among other things, the situation of the Doñana National Park announced today that they are canceling the trip, given the political weight that it has acquired in Spain in recent days.

In a statement, the delegation of the Parliamentary Environment Committee stresses that "German-Spanish relations are based on an intense exchange at all levels and are characterized by a deep mutual respect for the institutions and democratic processes of the respective other country."

"Out of this respect and in view of the great political relevance that the issues of the trip have acquired in recent days in view of the next Spanish national elections", this Bundestag commission "has decided to for the moment give up its planned trip to Andalusia long ago," he adds.

The members of the commission stress that "the trip was aimed at a technical exchange and to gather information" on climate change and its consequences, an issue, they add, that is of interest to both countries.

"Our two countries are united by a friendship of trust that has grown over the years", underlined the deputies, who added: "We trust that we can continue this exchange in the future".

The announcement last Friday of the visit of the German parliamentarians was known after the launch of a campaign by the German association Campact that aims to gather 200,000 signatures to demand that the country's supermarket chains stop selling strawberries from Spain so as not to contribute to the desiccation of the Doñana National Park.
