The Generalitat today approves the creation of a public energy company

The Consell Executiu plans to approve today the creation of a public energy company that will supply the Generalitat and other public bodies, as President Pere Aragonès announced on his last trip to New York. With the new company, the Government plans to accelerate the energy transition with the aim of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 55% in 2030 and reaching carbon neutrality in 2050.

The new energy company will be constituted as a single-member public limited company, with direct participation of the Generalitat. It will have two areas of activity always with renewable energy: generation and marketing. However, it is ruled out that it sells energy to companies or homes in competition with the existing private marketers.

In the field of generation, it will promote self-consumption or distributed generation projects in all public buildings of the Generalitat, for example with solar panels. These facilities can be opened to shared self-consumption and energy communities in which nearby vulnerable families can participate.

It will also develop generation projects of its own or shared with local entities and may take shares in private projects that have the approval of the territory. In addition, it will manage the hydroelectric plants as the current concessions expire. Along these lines, the Climate Action department, headed by Teresa Jordà, already announced at the end of May the start of a file to resume management of the first three hydroelectric plants (Can Trinxet, Cúbia and Vilana). According to the data that the ministry has advanced, the new company will have an energy supply policy that allows the purchase of renewable energy with bilateral agreements with local generators.

In addition, you will be able to carry out the commercialization activity by managing self-consumption surpluses and offering them to local entities or other public bodies. Likewise, it will be able to invest and participate in energy projects that are considered strategic for energy security. For example, in storage infrastructures, which with the development of renewable energies will become increasingly important.
