The Generalitat proposes a freeze on public transport fares in 2023

Public transport fares in 2023 are still unknown, since depending on the discounts approved by the Government, they will be one or the other. In any case, the Generalitat has wanted to advance the debate to propose a freeze on rates regardless of whether there are price reductions sponsored by the Ministry of Transport or not.

This has been assured by the Minister of Territory, Juli Fernández, in the plenary session of the Parliament. Bearing in mind that the Generalitat has 51% of the representation on the board of directors of the Metropolitan Transport Authority (ATM), this is likely to be the case. Although neither the City Council nor the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona (AMB) have spoken yet, it is most likely that they share a position since it is the year of municipal elections.

This means that if the Government decides to maintain the current bonuses, next year it will continue to pay the same as now, with the T-Casual reduced to 30% and the T-Usual to 50%. If the aid does not arrive from the Ministry of Transport, the freezing promised by the Generalitat will actually mean recovering the prices that were up to August.

Be that as it may, the only thing confirmed to date is that Rodalies will continue to be free throughout the year 2023 for travelers using the recurring pass, a measure criticized by Fernàndez, who favors reduced fares more than totally free because, In his opinion, it can cause "problems for users and feasibility problems for the rest of the transport systems".

For next year, the Minister of Territories also expects further progress in the deployment of T-Mobility throughout Catalonia, although according to the precedents, everything in this project tends to progress more slowly than politicians would like.
