The General Council of the Judiciary meets again today with little prospect of agreement

The General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ) celebrates today a new extraordinary plenary session to try to reach an agreement to appoint two magistrates of the Constitutional Court. The governing body of judges has been trying unsuccessfully since June to make these two appointments. The then president Carlos Lesmes tried to achieve a consensus between conservatives and progressives but the former did not want to.

After his resignation, the conservatives maintained their position in the face of what they considered an attack by the Government after several reforms of the judiciary. Now these are the ones who have already requested two plenary sessions to carry out the names of two magistrates for the TC, with the mandate expired since June.

The focus of shock at this time and for what this plenary session will also foreseeably be unsuccessful, is that the conservatives refuse to vote for the candidate presented by the progressives, the Supreme Court magistrate José Manuel Bandrés, and whom they consider close to the Government.

Until now, to avoid supporting this candidate, the conservative block refused to present its candidate and thus be able to vote for both. In a change of strategy from a few weeks ago, what they have done is present together with their candidate another considered progressive but not elected by their sector. For now, the progressives do not accept this imposition and insist that it must be Bandrés
