The Vatican bid farewell to Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI this Thursday at a three-hour funeral mass that began at 9 in the morning in Saint Peter's Square, before tens of thousands of faithful, presided over by Pope Francis and celebrated by the dean of the College of Cardinals, Giovanni Battista Re.

In the center of the atrium of the Vatican square, the mortal remains of Joseph Ratzinger, who died last Saturday at the age of 95, were placed after a procession from inside the basilica and after this Wednesday, at the closing of a funeral chapel that almost 200,000 people have visited, they were placed in a coffin made of cypress wood, as tradition dictates.

Pope Francis arrived minutes before the procession in a wheelchair and sat in a chair set up especially for him at the altar. The Pontiff highlighted the "wisdom, delicacy and dedication" that Benedict XVI "knew how to spread over the years" in the homily of the mass.
