The Facebook subcontractor in Barcelona joins the labor adjustment of technology companies with an ERTE

The wave of employment adjustments by technology companies around the world has also had an impact in Barcelona with a temporary regulation file (ERTE) in the subcontractor of the multinational Facebook, which from the Agbar Tower reviews violent or illegal content published on the social network. According to union sources, the adjustment measure will affect 680 workers out of a staff of about 2,000 people for a whole year.

The company justified the adjustment measure before the unions due to the drop in Spanish and Portuguese-speaking traffic. The temporary cut affects precisely the employees assigned to that area.

The subcontractor is called CCC, although it was acquired by the Canadian Telus a few months ago. Union sources said the temporary adjustment comes at a time when technology companies are carrying out job cuts around the world due to falling business profitability. Facebook landed in the Agbar Tower in Barcelona thanks to CCC in 2018. It started with half a thousand workers occupying eight floors of the iconic building, although little by little it grew to the current number of around 2,000. Yesterday it was impossible to contact the company.

The ERTE negotiations began a week ago. Union sources indicated that they still do not know if all the workers will be on file globally (the 680) or only partially. The same sources added that the company has not detailed whether the workers' wages will be supplemented or they will go directly to unemployment. As stated in the communication sent to the Labor Department of the Generalitat, of nine pages, the measure would come into force on March 13 and it would be a suspension of contracts for 365 consecutive days.

Being a company that works for Facebook, most of the staff are made up of foreigners who speak different languages. Sources of the workers indicated that they fear that a part of the employees who enter ERTE may choose to leave Barcelona so as not to be without work for months and living on a subsidy.

The ERTE comes after the company was sanctioned by the Labor Inspectorate of the Generalitat for not complying with the law for the prevention of psychosocial risks. A worker who was continually viewing violent images suffered from health problems.

On the other hand, this week the dismissal of 130 workers in an employment regulation file (ERE) of the Webhelp call center, chaired by Helena Guardans, has been closed. Company sources said that this adjustment measure is usual after the Christmas campaign.
