The murder of Maialen Mazón, 32, in an apartment hotel in Vitoria-Gasteiz this weekend has shocked Ãlava society, perplexed by a case of sexist violence that brings together a series of particularly dramatic components. The Basque Government Security Department confirmed yesterday that the young woman had tried to annul, at least twice, the restraining order against her ex-partner, Jaime Roca, a 33-year-old businessman arrested on Sunday night as the alleged perpetrator. of the crime. The suspect is also the father of their daughter, Aitana, a two and a half year old girl who was found next to the body in a bloody room. He would also be the biological father of the twins that his victim was expecting.
Although she was from Vitoria, the couple had lived in the Valencian Community for the last few years, where Jaime Roca is from. According to investigations, they had an extremely toxic relationship, marked by the violence that this man exerted on the young woman. The detainee had a restraining order that prevented him from approaching the victim, with whom he maintained, despite everything, a relationship that had not ended definitively.
The Security Department has verified that Maialen Mazón tried to annul the restraining order against Roca on at least two occasions. The first time was in January, when they visited the Basque Country and the Ertzaintza was able to verify that the distance was being broken, although with the consent of the victim.
The second time was a few days ago, on May 18. Maialen transferred the Ertzaintza that he had returned to live in Vitoria-Gasteiz, his city of origin. He also pointed out that he did not feel “fear” or a sense of “danger” with respect to Jaime Roca, with whom he still had a close relationship, and again asked to annul the aforementioned restraining order.
The young woman had settled in an apartment hotel on the central Gasteiz avenue and, according to the first investigations, she lived there only with her daughter. However, Maialen herself would have revealed her whereabouts to the attacker. On Sunday she had been to eat with her family. When she did not show up, a group of relatives moved to the aparthotel. There he found the young woman, stabbed, and little Aitana in a totally bloody room.
The Basque Police believe that the crime occurred on Saturday night; It is not yet clear if the alleged killer fled from her or if he spent the night at the aparthotel. On Sunday afternoon-night he was arrested near Zaragoza, when he was traveling in a taxi to the Valencian Community.
