The Barcelona Court files the cause of John McAfee's death in prison

The Barcelona Court has confirmed the file of the case regarding the death of John McAfee, founder of the antivirus that bears his name, which occurred in June 2021 in the Brians 2 prison in Sant Esteve de Sesrovires (Barcelona), concluding that it was a suicide and that "there are no indications" that point to "anything different."

In an order, the ninth section of the Barcelona Court has thus endorsed the file of the case previously ruled by the Martorell Court of Instruction (Barcelona) in February 2022 and which the family had appealed, and refuses to continue investigating the death of McAfee at the age of 75, which occurred after learning that he was going to be extradited to the United States for tax fraud.

McAfee was arrested in October 2020 at El Prat Airport, in Barcelona, when he was preparing to take a flight to Istanbul and since then he has been in preventive detention.

During the extradition hearing, the businessman, whose tax debt in the United States amounted to more than four million dollars, claimed to have paid "millions of dollars in taxes" and said he was the victim of political persecution for having reported corruption in the agency. tax.

On June 23, 2021, he was found dead in his cell, the same day that the National Court announced its decision to extradite him to the United States for alleged tax evasion.

For the Barcelona Court, all the reports presented - such as the forensic result of the autopsy, the police report, photographs of the body or the recordings from the penitentiary itself on the day of the events that confirm that he did not have contact with another inmate - coincide in that "there are no indications of anything other than a suicidal death."

In its resolution, which is firm and against which there is no appeal, the Barcelona Court thus adds that the case had already been archived as there were no "indications of the perpetration" of a crime in the death of the founder of the famous antivirus.

For the Barcelona Court, numerous investigation proceedings have already been carried out, "all essential and all conclusive" to support that it was a suicide, which is why it rules out the opening of new proceedings as the family had requested in their appeal. and confirms the dismissal of the case.

"We find the opening of new proceedings repetitive, useless and therefore impertinent and not necessary because it is not essential," the Court says in its order, and also points out that the family's appeal does not sufficiently argue the reason for additional evidence nor does it provide "no element that raises any other possibility" other than suicide.
