The autumn of the jellyfish in the Mediterranean

This morning, Gavà beach dawned full of jellyfish, as big as the one in the photograph we can see in La Vanguardia's Readers' Photos.

It is rather unusual to see them at this time of year, but, due to the strong heat and higher temperatures, they appear on the beach, as in this case on the Baix Llobregat coast.

Now, according to the Ministry of Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, the jellyfish is "common throughout the Mediterranean during the summer and also in autumn." For example, it is "very abundant in the Mar Menor." And, "in winter it survives in the form of a polyp."

The shape and color of the flattened umbrella is very characteristic. It predominates on the coasts since it requires finding a substrate where the polyps settle.

Adult populations are subject to the prevailing currents and winds, although "they have a good capacity for their own movement."
