The Academy restores pre-pandemic requirements to qualify for the Oscar

The Hollywood Academy, like many other institutions, is back to normal. In every sense. The entity has announced that it is restoring the requirements to qualify for an Oscar for its next edition. A decision made after the remission of the pandemic and agreed by the Board of Governors of said institution.

According to this resolution, all the films that aspire to get a statuette next year must have been released before December 31, 2022, both in theaters and on digital platforms.

It is not the only point to consider. Another aspect is that the films released in "streaming" that want to access the golden statuette must have had a commercial distribution of seven consecutive days in physical movie theaters, with at least three screenings per day.

With the closure of theaters in Los Angeles County (USA) in mid-March 2020 due to the pandemic, the Academy modified its calendar and allowed in the last two editions the candidacy of productions released only via "streaming" and available for 60 days after launch.

The Hollywood Academy explained in its statement that the "return to normality" has brought with it an increase in the number of metropolitan areas in which a film that aspires to the statuette can be released.

Traditionally, only those films shown in theaters in Los Angeles County were counted for this requirement, but since this year those present in theaters in the metropolitan area of the San Francisco Bay or in the cities of New York, Chicago, Miami and Atlanta.
