TecnoCampus announces its university training program for people over 55 years of age

TecnoCampus has presented its new training program in the Mataró Innova space to facilitate access to university for those over 55 years of age. The project, known as TecnoCampus Senior, was born with the aim of promoting lifelong learning and creating a space for training and intergenerational coexistence.

The proposal arises from the cooperation between the Chair of Aging and Quality of Life, the HUB4T permanent training center and the City Council. This initiative is part of the council's strategy to improve the quality of life of citizens, "Mataró, Ciutat Cuidadora".

"As a council, we are very pleased to participate in the TecnoCampus program to encourage people over 55 years of age to access university," explains Miquel Àngel Vadell, councilor delegate for the Presidency and Education. He adds: "From the council we are committed to turning Mataró into a caring and knowledgeable city, and this project helps us to achieve our goal."

In the pilot test that will be carried out during the third quarter of this year, a total of 50 subjects of the degrees offered in TecnoCampus will be opened. The training that can be accessed from this program will be in the areas of business knowledge, technology, audiovisuals and health sciences.

The inauguration of this new training program was attended by Elisabet Ruiz, deputy councilor of Gent Gran Activa; Esther Cabrera, doctor of medicine and director of the Chair of Aging and Quality of Life; Luz Fernández, head of permanent training at HUB4T- TecnoCampus; and Laura Rosillo, ASENCAT senior volunteer.

All of them highlighted the importance of promoting training among people over 55 years of age. "The creation of this program not only gives the opportunity to access university studies to people who could not, but also encourages the creation of talent that will benefit our society," says Elisabet Ruiz, councilor delegate of Gent Gran Activa.

In the presentation of TecnoCampus Senior, the senior volunteer of ASENCAT -Association of Seniors of Catalonia for the Orientation of Entrepreneurial Talent-, Laura Rosillo, gave a presentation on the evolution of society and the importance of lifelong training.

In his conference "The learning society in the era of longevity: From lifelong education to lifelong education" Rosillo explains that "older people have the task of considering their own future because they may find themselves living many years with no one to care for them due to increased life expectancy and decreased birth rate.

He also states that it is practically impossible for there to be a generational change because "the population over 50 doubles the number of people under 18" and that, therefore, "it is necessary to take them into account both in society and in the professional sphere”.

“In order to be able to incorporate more easily in both areas, older people need to broaden their training and acquire new skills, either through refresher courses or by attending regulated studies outside their area of expertise. And this is where TecnoCampus comes in”, concludes Laura Rosillo.

The inauguration of the TecnoCampus program for those over 55 to enter university ended with a round table on the importance of learning throughout life.

Esther Cabrera, director of the Chair of Aging and Quality of Life, will participate in it; Jordi Berni, senior mentor of ASENCAT; Joaquín Solana, economist and university professor; Antoni Vilà i Alsina, acting president of Aules Senior Mataró; and Antoni Gomà, member of the Kangaroo Committee of the Catalan Mathematical Society.

In the debate issues arose such as the importance of permanent training, the difficulty for the elderly to use technology or the role of women in education.

One of the ideas in which the speakers agreed is that training, whether regulated or not, is very important for a person, whether they are young or old, since it not only promotes their professional growth but also helps their emotional, social and intellectual development.
