The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, has defended that with the reform of the crime of sedition promoted by PSOE and Unidas Podemos, the State does not lose instruments to deal with conflicts such as those that took place in Catalonia in 2017, as the opposition reproaches him and in specifically the leader of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo. Specifically, he has used, among others, article 155 that was applied then to confront the attacks on the Constitution. Likewise, he has shied away from making any type of assessment on an eventual reform of the crime of embezzlement as proposed by Esquerra Republicana and has called for waiting for the parliamentary processing of the bill.
"Politics has instruments to overcome conflicts, which are dialogue and meetings; the Constitution has instruments to defend its compliance, which is article 155, and the rule of law is not going to be dismantled, on the contrary, those crimes that committed in 2017 continue to be criminalized but their sentences are standardized to those of the main European democracies that we want to be like", assured the head of the Executive at a press conference at the end of the G-20 summit that was held in Bali (Indonesia ).
The head of the Executive has insisted that what the Government of Spain is doing is "building harmony" in Catalonia and recalled that when he was elected president he inherited "a problem of coexistence" and that now "no one doubts that the situation today is infinitely better than that of 2017", for which reason he has demanded an attitude of "solidarity and responsibility" from the PP in this regard. "I appeal to them to lower their tone in their statements and in their way of doing politics," the president asked after sarcastically recalling that it was to the PP that they declared independence.
On the other hand, Sánchez has avoided pronouncing on the embezzlement reform that the ERC is asking for and that the Republican group will surely raise in the process of reforming the Penal Code via amendments. "We do not know what are the amendments that the groups are going to present," warned the president, who has opted to wait for these texts when the processing arrives. "Speaking in the abstract about a hypothesis is not up to me," Sánchez argued, who stressed that he has fulfilled a commitment that he had already expressed at the inauguration, alluding to the sedition reform.
