Sala Montjuïc closes its 20th edition with a historic audience record

Barcelona's Sala Montjuïc, an open-air cinema and live music space, has closed its 20th edition, held between July 1 and August 5, with a record of more than 39,000 spectators in 16 sessions, with almost all tickets sold.

As reported by Modiband, the cultural entity in charge of this space, the program has included some of the "most outstanding films of the season" and classics such as "Grease" (1978) or "With death on our heels" (1959).

The directors of the Sala Montjuïc, Nathalie Modigliani, Mireia Manén and Guillem Galera consider, according to the organization, that this year's success shows that open-air cinema has "something of a ritual, a social gathering and magic that makes that the population of a territory is filled with enthusiasm".

To celebrate 20 years of "open-air cinema, live music and picnics", the space presented a program, based on a selection of the films most voted by viewers, with feature films such as "Grease", "Interstellar" , "Lost in Translation", "The Big Lebowski", "Wild Tales" or "With death on your heels".

Once again this year, the Sala Montjuïc has been part of Nits Grec within the Grec Festival programme, with screenings such as "Belfast", "West Side Story", "A hero" and "Call Me By Your Name".

Halfway through the season, there was also a screening of "Alcarràs" by Carla Simón, winner of the Golden Bear, the highest prize awarded by the Berlinale film festival.

Titles such as "Licorice Pizza", "Coda" or "Palm Springs" have also been part of the programming.

Two "cult" films were screened at the opening and closing ceremonies, "Pulp Fiction", the most voted, and "High Fidelity", a film that was not revealed to viewers until the start of the screening.

In addition, on the occasion of its twentieth anniversary, the organization scheduled a micro-short contest under the slogan "I also love open-air cinema", which has demonstrated "the creativity of the most loyal public".

Sala Montjuïc has also hosted concerts, as it is one of its "seals of identity", such as the 'soul' trio The Sey Sisters, on the opening night, and other proposals, such as Los Stompers, Los Carosones, La Kolmena or Yacine Belahcene .
