Robert de Niro, protagonist and antagonist, in

At 79 years old, Robert de Niro boasts that he continues to have challenges in his career. The last one: having a double role, as protagonist and enemy, in Wise Guys, a new movie about the Italian-American mafia that will be recorded by the Warner Bros. studio.

The title of the project revealed this Tuesday by The Hollywood Reporter newspaper and whose plot will follow the mafia bosses Vito Genovese and Frank Costello, who led two feuding families in the mid-20th century. De Niro will play both characters, according to the publication. In 1957, Genovese attempted to assassinate Costello, incapacitating him and forcing him to retire from the mob.

Barry Levinson, responsible for titles such as Rain Man and Wag the Dog, will be in charge of directing the film, which will reunite the filmmaker with De Niro after working together on Sleepers, Wag the Dog and the HBO series The Wizard of Lies and What Just Happened.

The film will mark De Niro's return to the genre that made him a star, as his most celebrated works include Goodfellas, Casino and The Godfather Part II, a film with which he won the Oscar for best supporting actor in 1974.

He recently starred in The Irishman, Martin Scorsese's latest film, in which he reprized the role of a criminal kingpin in 1950s New York.
