Road to heaven in Montserrat

At the foot of the Montserrat mountain is Monistrol, a municipality bordered to the north by Castellbell and El Vilar, to the east by Vacarisses, to the west by Marganell and to the south by Esparregueres and Collbató.

Since its origins, this town has been conditioned by the Llobregat River, which crosses it and divides it in two, with the oldest town located on the right of the bank and the most recent on the left.

But Monistrol looks above all at Montserrat. In the town we find the Montserrat Rack Railway, which connects the train station with the mountain, where you can transfer there with the Santa Cova funicular, the Sant Joan funicular (both from FGC) and with the Aeri de Montserrat .

But if we decide to try walking, we find images like this one in which, with the fog that surrounds the landscape, it will give us the feeling that we are walking through the sky itself in Montserrat.

This rock massif is traditionally considered the most important and significant mountain in Catalonia. With a maximum height of 1236 meters at the Sant Jeroni peak, this mountain rises abruptly to the west of the Llobregat river.

Since, according to legend, the image of the virgin was found in the Santa Cova, Montserrat has been a place strongly linked to spirituality.

Although this characteristic culminates with the location of the Monserrat monastery almost at its summit, the mountain is also home to small churches and hermitages such as, for example, those of Santa Cecilia, Sant Benet, Sant Joan or Sant Jeroni.

In fact, there are various routes that can be followed to discover the mountain. This photograph in La Vanguardia's Readers' Photos is captured in the morning, already arriving at the Montserrat Abbey, walking from Monistrol.
