Peloton's CEO said that the recall is"the ideal thing to do."
Peloton along with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced two different voluntary recalls of Peloton's Tread+ and Tread treadmills after reports of injuries and a departure, Peloton and the CPSC said in a statement Tuesday.
The company has ceased selling the Tread+ and is working on changing the exercise apparatus.
In April, that the CPSC issued an"urgent warning" for folks to quit using Peloton's Tread+ treadmill if they have small children or pets at home, one month after the company revealed a child died in a collision involving the workout equipment.
The national regulatory agency said it had learned of"multiple incidents" of small kids and a pet being squeezed under and injured beneath the machines. As of April, the CPSC said it is mindful of 39 incidents involving the treadmill, including one death linked to the 4,295 treadmill.
Peloton said it detected through CPSC's public database which a child had undergone a brain injury in connection with the treadmill. The child is expected to"fully recuperate," the firm stated.
John Foley, Peloton's CEO, said the recall was"the right thing to do."
"The decision to remember both merchandise was the right thing to do for Peloton's Members and their families," he explained in a statement. "I need to be clear, Peloton made an error in our first reaction to the Consumer Product Safety Commission's request that we recall the Tread+. We ought to have participated more productively with them from the outset. For this, I apologize. Today's announcement reflects our understanding that, by working closely together with the CPSC, we can increase security awareness for our members. We believe strongly in the future of at-home connected fitness and therefore are committed to work with the CPSC to set new industry security standards for treadmills. We've got a desire and a responsibility to be a business leader in product security."
Added Robert S. Adler, acting chairman of the CPSC:"The arrangement, which the Commission voted this morning to take, necessitates Peloton to immediately stop selling and distributing both the Tread+ and Tread goods in the United States and refund the entire cost to customers who want to reunite their treadmills. The arrangement between CPSC and Peloton is the result of months of intense negotiation and effort, culminating in a joint arrangement that I believe serves the best interests of Peloton and of customers. I would like to thank the CPSC technical staff who have worked tirelessly to protect consumers and to warn the public. Now we've taken steps to prevent further harm from both of these products."
