Pedro Sánchez will be appointed president of the Socialist International at the end of November

The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, will be formally appointed President of the Socialist International for four years at a congress that will take place from November 25 to 27 in Madrid after the deadline for presenting candidacies ended yesterday and only his own had been presented .

“There could be no higher or dearer cause for those of us who sit here. For this reason, it will be a privilege to have the drive of all of you to carry it out”, assured Sánchez when announcing his candidacy on September 22 at the meeting of the Presidium that this organization held in New York, a few hours before intervening in the United Nations General Assembly.

According to socialist sources cited by EFE, Sánchez's will to provide more "package" to the Socialist International, as well as to increase the "influence" of this organization in relevant international forums such as the UN and to work to seek the return of parties like the German Social Democratic Party.

The president of the Socialist International is elected in congressional elections among the candidates presented for a four-year term. In this way, Sánchez will relieve former Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou, who has headed this organization since 2006, as president of the Socialist International.

The Socialist International currently brings together 132 social democratic, socialist and labor political parties from around the world. Its objective is to "consolidate and develop social democratic policies in the world", according to the organization itself on its website.

"Social democracy is the only viable alternative both to the individualism of the neoliberal order and to the return of extremism," defends Sánchez, for whom both phenomena "go hand in hand." The conservative response to the latest crisis caused a wave of inequality, which in turn increased mistrust in institutions. This context of the dismantling of the welfare state was the breeding ground for the appearance of extremist currents with which the Liberals are now allied as the only option for survival, according to the arguments of the PSOE leader.
