Born on May 5, 1927, in Shreveport, Louisiana, Carroll moved to Los Angeles at the age of five, beginning to work in show business at a very young age. During World War II she enlisted in the Army to work as a writer, producer and director of productions performed by soldiers. Her first film role of hers took place in 1947 with the film Hometown Girl.

The actress was about to lend her voice in the 1960s to Jane Jetson in The Jetsons, but was eventually replaced by Penny Singleton. In 1965, she would get into the skin of Prunella, one of the stepsisters in the television production of Cinderella starring Lesley Ann Warren.
