Palma celebrates 40 years of its great regatta

The Copa del Rey Mapfre turns 40 in 2022 and the Real Club Náutico de Palma is preparing to celebrate this anniversary with a program that matches what it means to organize one of the most prestigious international regattas.

The fleet of sailboats is made up in this edition of 111 teams of 20 nationalities and is divided into nine classes. Four of them compete in compensated time and five in real time. There will be three regatta areas in the bay of Palma and the tests are held from Monday, August 1 to Saturday, August 6.

The program also includes complementary events to highlight the importance that the Copa del Rey has acquired since it was created in 1982 to the present, both in sports and in the social, economic and global projection of Palma and Balearic Islands thanks to this competition.

The president of the Real Club Náutico de Palma, Emerico Fuster, emphasized this in the presentation of the regatta, last Friday: “The opening ceremony of this year's Copa del Rey Mapfre has a special meaning. In the first place, because we reached our 40th edition, and we also do it in excellent health, with the unconditional support of the institutions and sponsors without whose involvement it would be impossible to organize this great event. It is also special because it allows us to claim before public opinion and institutions the importance of the Real Club Náutico de Palma, a social heritage of Mallorca that has been committed to promoting sport and organizing major regattas since its foundation in 1948”.

“I want to take this opportunity to thank the support and affection that the Royal Family and the Naval Regatta Commission of the Spanish Navy have always given us, to which we will pay a well-deserved tribute within the 40th anniversary events, and invite you all you to attend this Sunday the presentation of the book where we have collected the great milestones of the journey of this regatta. We celebrate 74 years as a club and 40 editions of the Copa del Rey Mapfre. We are part of the maritime heritage of this land and we hope to stay here for a long time to continue writing this undoubtedly exciting story with your help”, concluded the president of the RCNP.

Óscar Celada, regional general manager of Mapfre in the Balearic Islands, highlighted that “one more year we start, with even more enthusiasm, our Copa del Rey Mapfre. A sustainable event, respectful of the environment and committed to equality, values that are part of Mapfre's DNA. It is a pride for all of us who are part of the Mapfre family to sponsor this competition, and we are convinced that this year it will be a resounding success that will once again make the Bay of Palma the best setting for this event”.

The 40th Copa del Rey is organized by the Real Club Náutico de Palma and the Royal Spanish Sailing Federation, with the sponsorship of Mapfre and the institutional collaboration of the Government of the Balearic Islands, the City Council of Palma, the Port Authority of the Balearic Islands and the Balearic Sailing Federation.
