Pact so that Moncloa does not challenge the Catalan law for the consultation of the Games

The Government of Pere Aragonès modified in March the law of non-referendum consultations so that the president of the Generalitat had the power to consult only a part of the territory. The change was devised with the aim of favoring the survey in the regions impacted by the possible celebration of the 2030 Winter Games. The Executive of Pedro Sánchez expressed doubts about the viability of the measure, but finally the Generalitat and Moncloa have reached an agreement so that the Government does not challenge this rule before the Constitutional Court.

The pact, advanced yesterday by Cadena Ser, takes place in a framework of maximum need for understanding between the PSOE and ERC, with the general budgets and those of the Generalitat at stake, in addition to the possible reforms of the Penal Code, although the Subcommittee for regulatory monitoring and conflicts agreed between the two forces has already avoided other jurisdictional conflicts in the past.

Both parties will agree in interpreting that the modification of the law is within the “autonomous powers of the Generalitat”. "Without affecting, therefore, the powers of local entities or violating, either, local autonomy," the text emphasizes.

The proposal for the Winter Games in Catalonia and Aragon for 2030 fell through, but the amendment to the law allows the president to convene any type of consultation he would not endorse at a supra-municipal level, in several municipalities or counties at the same time. Until then, he could only convene for all Catalan citizens.
