Only 20% of entrepreneurs in Spain are women

"Only 20% of entrepreneurs are women," Salvador Aragón, Chief Innovation Officer of IE University, assured this Wednesday in the presentation of the report The Map of Entrepreneurship 2022, prepared by the aforementioned business school and South Summit. "This is a pending issue, when women are highly qualified," the manager pointed out. Aragón considers that the projects they seek to undertake are related to "health and social issues", when the male entrepreneur bets more on technological issues, such as cybersecurity or artificial intelligence.

In fact, when asked why they wanted to be an entrepreneur, in the case of women only 24% opted for the answer "I always wanted to be an entrepreneur", when this figure rises to 43% in the case of men. On the contrary, the majority response in the case of women, representing 52% of the cases, was "I saw a market opportunity", a figure that drops to 39% in the male gender.

The deputy mayor of Madrid, Begoña Villacís, has reiterated that things must be called by their name and the problem "is motherhood", which is a handicap when women embark on the adventure of creating their own company .

However, it is not just a problem in Spain, since the average in Europe is 17%, in North America 21%, in Latin America 24% and, strikingly, in Africa the figure rises to 29%.

According to the aforementioned report, the profile of the entrepreneur in Spain is 33-year-olds, in 80% of cases men, of which 97% have a university degree and 70% master's degrees. "That age, points out Aragón, means that the entrepreneur already has management maturity and the ability to promote".

In his opinion, there are two types of entrepreneurs, "62% are serial, 2% more than last year, and the remaining 38% are new." "Experience counts and the probability of success increases if you have already worked in a similar company", she assured. More than 40% of the people who set out to set up a company have engineering studies; while over 30% have specialized in social sciences.

Another feature that has been seen since the end of the covid crisis is that a new figure is emerging: the solo or autonomous founder 3.0.

As for start-ups, they are on average 3 years old, 69% have between 2 and 10 employees and 60% are founded by between 2 and 3 people. However, Aragón has clarified, "projects are beginning to be seen in which only one person is in charge".
