One hundred days of the Russian invasion, in pictures

A man plays the piano in front of his bomb-damaged house in the Ukrainian town of Velyka Kostromka. A dog is not separated from his owner after she passes away in Bucha. Two women in pajamas breathe in smoke from the bombings over Odessa. Civilians help an elderly woman to cross a collapsed bridge in Irpin. A father says goodbye to his family at a train station. A pregnant woman is evacuated from a bomb-ridden hospital in Mariupol.

The contradictions of the war are present in the woman who waters a surviving flower from what was her garden, among the debris of her old home; in the boy who clings to a wooden weapon, and in the sight of a Russian-made Dragunov rifle, wielded by an invisible Ukrainian in the photograph. Also, in the man who reads leaning on a Russian rocket and in innocent eyes that observe the interior of an empty school bus in whose seats rest dolls and not children.

These images have illustrated the reality of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine in its first 100 days: the captures portray the victims and exhibit the vestiges of the peoples that the war has devastated in its advance.
