Olympic figure skating champion Roman Kostomarov in critical condition

Former Russian athlete Roman Kostomarov, a figure skating star who won gold at the 2006 Turin Winter Games and was a two-time world champion, is torn between life and death.

As reported by the doctors at the Moscow Kommunarka hospital to the Ria Novosti agency, and the Italian agency ANSA has reported, the clinical conditions of the 46-year-old former athlete have worsened in recent hours after suffering a stroke, as also pointed out by Corriere della sera.

Kostomarov had been admitted a few weeks ago due to bilateral pneumonia, in critical conditions that forced the amputation of his feet and some fingers.

"He suffered a second brain hemorrhage and his conditions are serious," hospital doctors explained. In fact, after the intervention and after spending some time in intensive care, the expat skater's state of health improved, but later it worsened again due to the stroke.

16 years ago, Roman Kostomarov won Olympic gold together with his compatriot Tatyana Navka, with whom he also won two world and three European titles.

When he retired, the former Russian athlete continued to perform exhibitions in locations with very low temperatures, which could have been the origin of the bilateral pneumonia that forced his hospitalization.
