Nicola Sturgeon to step down as Scottish First Minister

The first minister of Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon, will resign after more than eight years in office, according to the BBC.

According to the British chain, the leader of the Scottish National Party will make the official announcement at a press conference organized impromptu in Edinburgh. A source close to Sturgeon has told the British network that the Scottish policy had "had enough".

Sturgeon has held the position since November 2014, when he replaced Alex Salmond after the independence referendum, when 55% of Scots voted against leaving the United Kingdom. She thus became the longest-serving prime minister in the country.

It had recently been embroiled in a dispute over transgender policies after Scotland passed a gender recognition reform bill that made it easier for people to change their legal gender.

Sturgeon had stated his intention to call a second independence referendum in October of this year. However, the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom, the highest British judicial instance, ruled last year that the Scottish Home Rule Parliament has no power to call a consultation on the demerger without the consent of the British (central) Government, on the understanding that it is of "matters reserved to the British Parliament".

The Scottish government has so far refused to comment on the matter.
