Mustang Mach-E RWD Extended Range, farther, just as effective

More than a year ago we brought you the test of the Mustang Mach E, the 100% electric model of the American brand. In that case, it was the most powerful version and with the largest battery in its offer, that is: 351 CV as a result of its two electric motors that ensure all-wheel drive, in addition to a 99 kWh battery and an official autonomy of nothing more. and no less than 540 km.

But today we bring you the version that further improves this range per battery charge, it is the rear-wheel drive Mach E and the same high-capacity 99 kWh battery, which extends that figure to 600 km. One of the best autonomies among the electric ones in our market.

The formula for this version is simple, the structure of the Mach E remains identical, including its lithium-ion battery configuration located throughout the base of the floor, but the front engine is dispensed with to be a rear-wheel drive car with 291 hp and 430Nm. More than enough power to continue ensuring the dynamism typical of good-performance electrics, but also capable of managing the lowest weight of the set, which is around 90 kilos less than the all-wheel drive version.

Its fast charging recharging system is also maintained up to a maximum power of 150 kW and conventional charging by alternating current of 11 KW, maintaining the same times of half an hour with the fastest system and six hours to go from 0 to 80 % charge with alternating current.

At the level of behavior there are no big differences either, since the car continues to be remarkably reactive, with good poise, although conditioned by its high weight that exceeds 2.2 tons empty. The braking, although up to the level of efficiency and safety, does not admit intensive use.

At strong speeds, which are not ideal for an electric car, the lack of drive of the absent front engine is noticeable, especially at the exit of curves where the entry of electronic traction control on the rear axle is evident much earlier to optimize torque delivery.

If we talk about pure performance we see that this RWD version with respect to the one with all-wheel drive and 351 CV loses capabilities, even so, we are talking about an acceleration of 7 seconds from 0 to 100 km/h compared to 5.8 seconds for the AWD. In both cases, the maximum speed is self-limited to 180 km/h.

It also retains all three modes of operation; Whisper, for use on expressways and with little retention, Active mode, with greater retention for urban use, and Untamend or Mustang mode where maximum performance is sought.

Of course, the E-Pedal system is maintained, with which you can drive exclusively with the accelerator pedal and its total braking system by retention when we release it, something that you have to get used to but that can be very useful in urban driving and of maximum efficiency.

Obviously, where it does improve is in its autonomy that, although in the test it has not reached those 600 km announced, it has maintained a range above 510 km. In general, we are talking about 13% more range with 18% less power and this taking into account that we have carried out this test in a fairly cold period, and as you already know, it reduces the efficiency of the battery.

Worth? Well, yes, if your priority is autonomy or having greater peace of mind on a day-to-day basis on long journeys. On the other hand, the price of this version is 72,600 euros, almost 5,000 euros less than the all-wheel drive version and its 351 CV. If, on the contrary, we are not going for an extra 60 theoretical km of autonomy, the benefits of the AWD version are much more convincing.

For the rest, in both cases we are dealing with a car practically traced, and that except for the 18-inch wheels of this Premium RWD version compared to the 19-inch ones of the AWD, its design, philosophy and high level of equipment and finishes remain unchanged.

With a 4.7-meter-long crossover-style body, the Mach E remains a large car with good habitability, capable of offering up to five seats with comfortable and spacious front seats, as well as a second row with good space. for the legs and head, although with a raised floor that forces you to travel with your legs slightly bent.

The main trunk, which is accessed through a generous manual-opening tailgate for this finish, has a capacity of 402 liters on a very flat surface and with a double bottom floor where you can store some of the charging cables, although For this, the extra 82-liter chest that they offer us under the front hood is much better.

In terms of equipment, this Premium version has a high endowment and that of course includes the huge central screen of 15.5 inches in vertical format and its effective Ford Sync multimedia system. It is a screen with a good resolution and simple menu management and Widgets, although complete and quite intuitive.

It also does not forget leather details, electric front seats, climate control integrated into the main screen, as well as a complete panel of security elements such as Matrix Led automatic high beams, adaptive speed control, the warning and actuator for change and maintenance. lane or the parking aid system with a 360-degree camera. Undoubtedly, a very high endowment for a car that seeks to be a benchmark premium among long-range electric cars.
