Museums on alert for vandalism

The Ministry of Culture and Sports warns caution in state museums and asks for extreme security measures, due to recent attacks by environmental activists against works of artistic heritage in galleries in London or Berlin.

The latest attack on museums occurred this Monday, October 24, at Madame Tussauds in London, where activists from the environmental group Just Stop Oil, perpetrators of the attack on Van Gogh, threw cakes at the wax figure of the king Charles III.

The head of the Department of Conservation-Restoration of the Reina Sofía Museum, Jorge García Gómez-Tejedor, has acknowledged in statements to Europa Press that in the art gallery they are "more aware" of this type of attack because they have "emblematic works that may be more susceptible of an act of vandalism".

However, he has assured that for the moment they have not increased security, although the public is "observed more". Likewise, he has warned that they will assess "other measures according to the evolution" of these actions and has stressed that they focus on having "rapid responses" prepared in the face of these or other types of incidents.

"We are trying to be more alert and more vigilant, and that in the event that this happens, the people involved do not leave just like that. We are talking about artistic heritage," he stressed, adding that "what is happening makes no sense."

The works of the Reina Sofía are already protected according to their conservation vulnerability. The most delicate are protected by some type of glass or climatic cabinets, while others with less vulnerability have a safety distance marked.
