At least two gunmen shot and killed activist and lawyer Cecilia Monzón this Saturday morning while she was driving through the streets of San Pedro Cholula, in the central Mexican state of Puebla, local media reported.
According to the information, the also feminist was hit by a couple of hit men traveling on a motorcycle who shot Monzón at least three times, an attack that caused her death. Until now, the State Prosecutor's Office has not ruled on the crime.
Cecilia Monzón was known in the public sphere for her political activity. She was a supporter of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) and also a candidate for the municipal presidency of San Pedro Cholula for the Green Ecologist Party (PVEM).
The former official dedicated her life to defending cases of women in situations of violence or abuse, such as physical attacks or demands for alimony; In addition, she evidenced the omissions of the penal system and failures in justice that are committed against those who are part of the political sphere in Puebla.
Monzón was a victim of the obstacles that exist in the Mexican judicial system to resolve issues with a gender perspective, since a complaint for alimony against the PRI member Javier López Zavala, father of her son, was pending. On May 20, the victim reported to the State Attorney General's Office that the legal process was not progressing, despite complying with all the evidence.
After the crime, politicians and friends lamented the death of the activist, including the mayor of San Pedro Cholula, Paola Angón, who offered the job in a coordinated manner to clarify the crime. “I strongly condemn the cunning attack that took Cecilia Monzón's life. My government will work in close coordination with the Puebla Prosecutor's Office and with the instances that are necessary, to find the intellectual and material authors of this attack, ”said the official on her Twitter account.
Meanwhile, the counselor of the National Women's Institute (Inmujeres), Lizeth Mejorada, called for those responsible to be punished and "not to leave this crime unpunished." Likewise, the Citizen Observatory of Sexual and Reproductive Rights AC (ODESYR) lamented the murder of the lawyer and activist and demanded that the authorities clarify the facts.
