Márquez will miss the Argentine GP after undergoing surgery on his right hand

The start of the season for Marc Márquez is being to forget. The Catalan ended up injured and penalized after hitting Miguel Oliveira in Portimão, in an accident where both ended up on gravel, and this Monday his team, Repsol Honda, has confirmed that he will be out for the next Argentine Grand Prix after undergoing surgery with right hand success.

Márquez underwent surgery at the Ruber Internacional Hospital in Madrid by Dr. Ignacio Roger de Oña, along with fellow doctors Samuel Antuña and Andrea García Villanueva, for a displaced intra-articular fracture at the base of the first metacarpal of the thumb. Surgery consisted of closed reduction of the fracture and internal fixation of the fracture with two screws.

The man from Cervera started from pole position at the Portuguese circuit, quite a surprise given the previous performance of the Honda, but in the first meters he was relegated to fourth place. Márquez, always aggressive in his driving, forced himself to recover positions and on the third lap, when going through the third corner, he over-braked. His motorcycle contacted Jorge Martín's, third at the time, and knocked down Miguel Oliveira, who was second.

"For me the most important thing is that Miguel is fine, today another rider crashed because of me, because of my mistake, and it made me feel very bad, I have personally apologized to him and I ask him again here, I apologize to his entire team and also the Portuguese fans because it was their grand prix, but obviously it was not my intention to make that mistake and end the race like this", lamented Márquez.

The eight-time world champion received a double penalty for his mistake. He had to perform a long lap twice at the Argentine circuit of Termas de Río Hondo, where the second MotoGP Grand Prix will be held on April 2. Márquez added 7 points in Portimão thanks to his third place in the debut of the Sprint race on Saturday, but he went empty on Sunday and will have another zero on his scoreboard after the World Cup in Argentina.

The ilerdense arrived with doubts at the start of the World Cup due to the performance of the Honda, although for the first time since 2020 in full physical condition, having already overcome the fracture in the right humerus that made him undergo surgery several times and forced him to do countless hours of recovery to leave behind the bad feelings.

However, the ghosts of the past have returned to visit him in his attempt to once again rub shoulders with the best this season. After Argentina, the next World Cup test will be in the United States. It will be held on April 16 at the Las Américas circuit, one of Márquez's favorites where he has won six times. But for the moment he has to rest.
