Meritxell Batet will not be the PSOE candidate to preside over Congress

The current president of the Congress of Deputies, Meritxell Batet, will not be a candidate for re-election, as confirmed by PSOE sources, who indicated that she does not want to repeat the position in the next legislature. This is not a waiver of use, since the head of the PSC list for Barcelona has not been part of the shortlist of Socialists to preside over the chamber and, therefore, become the third authority of the State during the next legislature

According to these sources, Batet has stated that it has been a great honor to have carried out this responsibility and has shown his enormous gratitude for all the support received over the years. There are only nine days left for the important vote that will decide who will preside over the Lower House and who controls the Board, a vote that is not guaranteed for Pedro Sánchez at this time.

Batet had been telling his entourage for some time that he did not want to repeat the work that he has carried out during the last legislature in the Presidency of Congress. He spoke of wear and tear after more than three and a half hard years, with a pandemic as soon as the legislature began, and a convulsive day-to-day life that reached its peak with the withdrawal of the seat of the United Podemos deputy, Alberto Rodríguez, and the conflict with Judge Marchena.

The ex-minister has stated that she is convinced that a progressive majority will be formed in the Board of the chamber chaired by a socialist candidate that will allow the great advances achieved in this legislature to continue.

The Catalan deputy also considers that the socialist project headed by Pedro Sánchez is the one that offers the best solutions to the problems of the citizenry compared to those that only offer regression, and that the XV Legislature will be a new example of this.

The information is known at a time when negotiations between parties are intensifying for the constitution of the Congress Table on August 17. The composition of the chamber's governing body, which could include nationalist or pro-independence formations, will be a first indication of the progress of the negotiations for the formation of the new government for which the PP and PSOE are fighting.

The Congress Table is made up of nine members and the PSOE, the one that is emerging with the most support to preside over the Chamber, is negotiating with various bands without losing sight of the objective of achieving a majority of five positions against the parties of the right .

The gap left by Batet in the Presidency of Congress is important. The PSOE must propose a deputy of maximum confidence of Sánchez for a legislature that is not expected to be easy. This proposal, which will be announced in the coming days, could cause changes in the current Council of Ministers if the acting President of the Government opts for a member of his Executive to play a relevant role during the investiture.
