Merger in ultra-fast deliveries: Getir buys its competitor Gorillas for 1,200 million

Turkish platform Getir today announced the acquisition of its German competitor Gorillas. With this operation, two giants join the delivery of supermarket products in 10 minutes.

"Markets go up and down, but consumers love our service and convenience is here to stay. The ultra-fast delivery industry will continue to grow for many years to come and Getir will lead this category that it created 7 years ago," he said. stated Nazim Salur, founder of Getir in a brief statement in which the price of the operation is not detailed. According to sources close to Bloomberg, the operation has been closed for a price of 1,200 million dollars.

Getir will become the main operator at European level in the ultra-fast delivery sector. The company was born 7 years ago in Istanbul. Since then, the company has expanded in the UK, acquiring Weezy; in France, buying Frichti; Italy, Portugal and Spain. In fact, in this country, the year 2021 landed with the acquisition of the Barcelona startup Blok, founded by the entrepreneur Hunab Moreno.

Throughout this time, Getir has expanded rapidly thanks to the injection of venture capital. At the beginning of this year, he raised almost 700 million euros in a macro investment round in which he obtained a valuation of 12,000 million (the equivalent of 12 unicorns).

But the panorama changed due to the rise in interest rates, the fall in the stock markets and hyperinflation. In May, the company announced a 14% cut in its workforce, an indicator of the adjustments that awaited this brand new sector. In fact, Gorillas also went through a time of severe adjustments, starring in an ERE in Spain and staff cuts in Berlin.
