“To the extent that there is fair marketing for all parties, the entire chain will benefit. It is expected that it will be the beginning of a successful relationship, which in turn will be an example for other sectors,” Vargas added.

The president of CAPORC, Luis Diego Rojas, considers the agreement a historic milestone for the pork sector. “We are proud to be an example for other markets and industries,” he said. "We are convinced," he added, "that through the work path that we began with this firm, we will generate experience and lessons learned that can be extrapolated to other sectors, resulting in a contribution to the country," he said.

For his part, Miquel Àngel Bergés, general director of Mercolleida, stated that it will be an enriching experience for the generation of new markets and their adaptation in the Latin American region, considering the particularities of each country.

For Bergés, the agreement is also an important recognition of the work carried out for years at the Lleida market, which reflects the high degree of professionalization of the Spanish pork sector.

This signature accelerates the process that has already been outlined with the actors in the chain: producers, industrialists and distributors. CAPORC and Mercolleida have collaborated in the study of the main parameters of the Costa Rican pork market since 2021, this work now bearing fruit in the signing of the letter of understanding that ratifies the mutual interest in the project. It is the first time that Mercolleida “exports” its market model to another country.

To do this, according to the auction, the system of Spanish parameters must be adapted to the reality and peculiarities of the Costa Rican market and create flows of trust to agree on the participation of all links in the Costa Rican pork chain. Mercolleida already has users in Central and South America.
