Matt Damon announces at the Berlinale that he is preparing a documentary about Ukraine

If yesterday Sean Penn was the center of attention at the Berlin International Film Festival for his documentary Superpower, focused on the figure of Ukrainian President Zelenski and the Russian invasion of Ukraine, this Sunday his compatriot Matt Damon has announced that he also has in mind carry out an ambitious project on Ukraine.

"I have someone there investigating, but the issue is still in its initial phase," he said, without giving further details, during the press conference for Kiss The Future, a documentary he produces with his inseparable friend Ben Affleck, and which deals with the Bosnian War in an exploration of the dangers of nationalism and the role of art as a weapon of resistance and activism. A film that also features interventions by the U2 group, protagonists of the post-war concert that the Irish band held in Sarajevo.

Damon has claimed that he has not been able to meet with Zelensky, but that he had the opportunity to meet his wife in New York during the UN General Assembly. "I think there are a lot of interesting movies being made about it right now. And I'm sure there will be many more in the future." Directed by Nenad Cicin-Sain, Damon was immediately drawn to the Kiss the Future story that the Slovenian filmmaker wanted to portray on the big screen.

"Nenad is very humble and I knew it was something very personal for him, so it was impossible not to be involved in the project." The filmmaker said he was drawn to the story of the U2 concert as a way to re-explore what had happened in Sarajevo after seeing a "resurgence" of nationalism in the region in recent years. One of the obstacles was the scarcity of images of the event, which is why he contacted Damon, who is a good friend of Bono's, to provide him with material for the film.
