Mataró activates the video surveillance plan with 66 cameras distributed in sensitive areas

The mayor, David Bote, and the Councilor for Public Safety, Juan Carlos Jerez, accompanied by the head of the Local Police, Mayor Mateo Sánchez, presented the video surveillance plan. The installation of cameras on public roads is one of the actions provided for in the Local Security Plan 2021-2024 to improve the effectiveness, efficiency and sustainability in the management of public safety and traffic.

A total of 66 cameras will be installed in six sensitive areas of Mataró: Plaza de Miquel Biada -in front of the Renfe station-, in Calle de Rosselló, in Rocafonda Park, in the Pla d'en nightlife area Boet, in the Plaza de Santa Ana and La Rambla, and in the historical center.

The objective of the Plan is to guarantee continuous surveillance of these areas, improve the perception of security and have evidence of criminal acts that may occur. The use of these devices is governed by the regulations on police video surveillance and data protection.

The 66 cameras provided for in the Video Surveillance Plan will be distributed by 38 control points located in the 6 defined areas. The images they record will be viewed from the Coordination Room of the Local Police.

These cameras allow both preventive surveillance and monitoring of incidents that may occur in these areas. The video surveillance devices are state-of-the-art: they have night vision, have an intelligent detection and incident alert system, and far-reaching optical resolution that makes it possible to identify faces and license plates from 400 meters away. The recorded images will be stored for 30 days and can be used as evidence.

The installation of the video surveillance system and the information panels, as well as the supply of hardware and software for the implementation of the cameras, and the civil works of pipes and installations, have been awarded for €1.6 M. The City Council is awaiting the resolution of a grant application in order to finance part of this cost with European funds earmarked for traffic calming projects.

The works to install the video surveillance cameras began this month of March and have an expected duration of 5 months. The first connection tests have already begun and informative signage on the location of the cameras will be installed when the devices come into operation, foreseeably in autumn.

The Video Surveillance Plan is part of the commitment of the Local Police to use technological tools to provide a better service to citizens. Other technological resources that have been implemented are the one-person cameras to record the most complex actions or the new App "Seguridad Mataró", which allows businesses to notify the Local Police with just one click in the event of an incident. related to security in your establishment.

The feasibility of installing more citizen security cameras in other parts of the city is currently being studied.
