Marc Márquez will undergo surgery again and says goodbye to the season

Marc Márquez has said enough. He cannot continue riding with suffering, with pain, with a bad position, without his style, and with mediocre results, and he has decided to have surgery on his right humerus again. It will be the fourth surgical intervention since he broke his right arm in Jerez in July 2020. On Tuesday he will travel to the US to undergo surgery at the Mayo Clinic. The 2022 season is over for him. And there are three.

This was announced this Saturday in Mugello, after the qualifying session in which he set the 12th time trial and suffered a spectacular fall, although without physical consequences -and that nothing has influenced the operation-.

“I am going to have surgery next week. Since the first injury to his right arm, everything has been very complicated. I'm not enjoying myself, I'm in pain, I'm in a lot of pain, I can't drive as I want, and I'm starting to injure my left shoulder due to compensation. My performance is not what I want."

“If I decide to have surgery it is because I want to ride a motorcycle again. Otherwise, with the arm I have, I could lead a normal life. I am mentally prepared. If not, I would have thrown in the towel. Life is not for cowards."

"In these four months (of competition) I did not have any improvement. We considered undergoing another operation. It was difficult. I did everything possible to avoid the operation. It is not what I want, but it is the way to recover. My driving style did not is the same, my right arm position is not natural".

"Dr. Joaquín Sánchez Sotelo from the Mayo Clinic is the one who will operate on me. It should be now. They did some tests to see how solidified the bone is, they told me yesterday at 12 o'clock. And he told me: "The rotation of the arm is excessive, I don't know what you're doing. But come here and we'll fix it for you."

“I hope to return soon, but not in a hurry. I have no idea when I'll be back. I'm going to take it step by step. It's going to be a long time. Every weekend is a nightmare. My goal is to come back, and for that I have to prepare for the 2023 season. I have to thank Honda for giving me all their support."

“To fix the problem they are going to create a fracture, they are evaluating where, in the upper part of the humerus, to compensate for the rotation. They will create a crack. My problem now is that I lack rotation and on the straight I go with my arm more open and I raise my elbow in the corners to compensate. My forearm has been mounted, my shoulder hurt, also the left one because I was compensating. It's not my style of riding and from session to session there were a lot of ups and downs."

"Motorcycles are still my passion and my lifestyle. Stopping and throwing in the towel has been close, but I'm still ambitious and want to fight for what I want. I push the limit every weekend. The passion is still bigger than the suffering. Now the suffering was greater than the fun. It's what makes me continue with the objective and with the sport that has made me so happy".
