The Safety and Emergencies delegate and spokesperson for the Madrid City Council, Inmaculada Sanz, provided these data this Wednesday during the inauguration of the Urban Road Safety Congress, organized by the Madrid Municipal Police and the Foundation for Road Safety (Fesvial).

Sanz pointed out that Madrid registered 9,300 traffic accidents with victims last year, which is 13% less compared to 2019 (in 2020 and 2021 there were mobility restrictions due to states of alarm to stop the spread of the coronavirus pandemic). covid-19). There were also decreases in deaths (-40%), seriously injured (-8%) and lightly injured (-17.8%).

In addition, the total number of road accidents fell by 7.8% last year compared to 2019 and breathalyzer tests were close to 120,000, 14% more than before the pandemic. "Although the data is good, it is not enough, you have to keep working and not let your guard down," said Sanz.

On the other hand, Sanz stressed that the main objective of the 2021-2030 Road Safety Strategic Plan in the city of Madrid is "the protection of the physical integrity of road users, guaranteeing the organization and coexistence of the different modes of transport , with zero tolerance for accidents and seeking the involvement of the citizens of Madrid”.

Sanz inaugurated the Congress, which houses the Integral Training Center for Security and Emergencies of the City Council (Cifse), together with Pere Navarro, General Director of Traffic of the Government of Spain; Javier Llamazares, president of Fesvial, and Alfonso Gil, senator and former mayor of the Bilbao City Council Alfonso Gil.
