Madrid has woken up with the flags at half-staff as a result of the three days of official mourning decreed by the president of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, for the death yesterday of Queen Elizabeth II.
The regional government has indicated in a statement that it will also pay homage to the monarch with the lighting of the Royal Post Office, seat of the Madrid Government Presidency located in Puerta del Sol, with the colors of the British flag.
After knowing the death, Ayuso expressed on Twitter defined Isabel II as "iconic woman of the 20th century".
These measures have been assessed by the spokeswoman for United We Can in the Madrid Assembly, Carolina Alonso, who does not think it "appropriate" for Ayuso to decree three days of official mourning "for a foreign monarch who has little to do with the Community of Madrid" and has not paid, "for example", any tribute to the writer Almudena Grandes or attended her funeral.
"These are typical issues that the president focuses on that do not seem very appropriate to us," added Alonso.
