LaLiga has convened an extraordinary assembly on April 19 to deal with the Negreira case. The president of the employers' association, Javier Tebas, confirmed with a message on his Twitter account a meeting with the clubs in which they await explanations from the president of Barça, Joan Laporta, in relation to the payments for almost two decades of the Barça entity to a company owned by José María Enríquez Negreira, former vice-president of the Technical Committee of Referees.
This past Monday the Barça club requested the resignation of Tebas as a result of a news item in La Vanguardia in which it was reported that the leader presented erroneous evidence to the Prosecutor's Office that could incriminate Barça. The Spanish soccer president accused this newspaper of slander and requested a rectification through a burofax.
The Barcelona entity expressed its "deep anger, indignation and weariness" for what they consider a constant interference and overreach of its functions by Thebes, which has publicly requested on repeated occasions an explanation from Laporta of the Negreira case and has even called for the resignation of the president culé before the lack of answers.
LaLiga, on behalf of the majority of Spanish professional football clubs, has been presented as a private prosecution in the trial of the Negreira case, in the same way as other sports entities such as the Spanish Football Federation, the Higher Sports Council and later added to this list Real Madrid.
The possible sports sanctions for Barça derived from the Negreira case have expired, since the last payment was made in 2018, but the Barcelona club is exposed to criminal punishment if the courts confirm any irregularity. In the European sports field, on the other hand, UEFA, a private organization, could sanction the blaugrana by leaving them out of their competitions, including the Champions League.
