A woman was taken into custody in Costa Rica for murdering a professional cyclist on Thursday. She will be held on a $3.5million bond. According to Travis County court records, Kaitlin Armstrong will need to surrender her passport before she can be released. She will also be GPS monitored.
Armstrong was found in a hostel in Santa Teresa Beach, Provincia de Puntarenas (Costa Rica) earlier this week. In a statement, the Marshals Service stated that Armstrong was found in Santa Teresa Beach hostel, Provincia de Puntarenas, Costa Rica. According to the agency, Armstrong was expected to return to the United States where she will face a murder charge for the death Anna Moriah Wilson. Wilson, a Vermont native and a mountain biker, was in Austin, Texas for a cycling event.
Wilson was found with gunshot wounds in her Austin home on May 11. The victim died from her injuries after CPR was performed by responding officers. The 25-year old was visiting Austin to compete in a bicycle race. She was originally from Vermont.
Six days after her murder, authorities issued an arrest warrant for Armstrong accusing her of Wilson's murder.
According to authorities, Armstrong sold her vehicle on May 13th and flew from Austin into Houston within minutes of being interrogated by authorities about Wilson’s death. The service stated that Armstrong flew to New York then used a fake passport to fly from Newark (New Jersey) to San Jose (Costa Rica) on May 18.
U.S. Marshals Service raised the Kaitlin-Armstrong investigation to major case status in the early stages of this investigation. This likely played a crucial role in her capture following a 43-day run." Susan Pamerleau, Marshal for Texas' Western District.
According to an affidavit, Wilson was previously acquainted with Colin Strickland (cyclist), who cooperated with investigators. Armstrong's SUV was captured on surveillance video at the scene where Wilson was shot to death.
